REMS Scan for Osteoporosis & Low Bone Mass

The Skeleton You Don't See: Why Bone Health Scans Matter

Women: Fighting the Fragile Factor

It’s true that Women face an uphill battle when it comes to bone health.  Smaller frames, naturally thinner bones, and the impact of menopause  all add to the osteoporosis risk.

Estrogen, which does so much for women's health, also plays a role in protecting our bones. As levels drop, risk increases.

The numbers here are sobering. About half of all women over 50 will have a bone break because of osteoporosis. Hip fractures are especially concerning and can dramatically change a person's life.  Prevention is our best weapon!

You probably don't spend too much time considering your skeleton. It's just there, providing a sturdy framework for your body. But your bones aren't just a rigid structure – they're living tissue. And like any other part of your body, they need care to stay strong. That's where bone health screenings come in.

Here's an important fact: osteoporosis, a condition where bones become dangerously weak and brittle, is seriously underdiagnosed. We're talking broken bones from minor falls or even a hearty sneeze.  And it's not cheap – broken bones mean hospital stays, missed work, and a pile of medical bills.

The tricky part is osteoporosis often works silently. You won't feel it weakening your bones until it's too late.  Early detection is key – that's where bone health screenings become crucial.

Why Men Need to Pay Attention Too

Men should not dismiss osteoporosis as solely a women's health issue.  While you might start off with stronger bones, that doesn't mean you're immune. Strong bones are essential for everyone to stay active and independent as they age.

We Use REMS Technology

For many years, DXA (aka DEXA) has been considered the Gold Standard in screening for bone health. However, the newer REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) technology is fast becoming sought after across the world. Here's why:

  • Radiation Free. DEXA emits small amounts of ionizing radiation to capture images of your bones. REMS, however, uses ultrasound technology which is safe for all.
  • Accuracy When It Counts. REMS Scans have the highest accuracy rate available, whereas DEXA Scans can have up to 5% variability in reporting. In addition, DEXA Scans can be susceptible to operator error.
  • Bone Fragility Reporting.  While DEXA Scans only measure surface bone density, REMS provides a full bone microarchitecture and quality assessment.

The Bottom Line

Whether you're a man or woman, strong bones are the foundation of a long and active life. Bone health screenings are like having a crystal ball for your skeleton – letting you take charge of your health proactively.

If those tests uncover any issues, there's good news! Lifestyle changes and OsteoStrong can make a world of difference. So schedule that screening, and take the steps needed to keep your bones strong.
